Where does all public data research data go?

Each year, hundreds of genetic studies are being conducted by academic researchers, examining plant species, population types, environmental conditions and locations. Although the data is public and could be immensely valuable to any research effort, public or private, data from research goes nowhere.

Instead of being stored in a way that makes it accessible and that preserves the enormous value of the data (annual public plant research costs millions of dollars) datasets are published in scientific journals (as PDF files) and the underlying data is “forgotten” in the researcher’s spreadsheet files.

Project Unity is a platform that host all phenotype-to-genotype public-domain data in a common and unified platform, offered as a free service for academia. Each researcher will be able to load their data and connect it to existing global knowledge, by linking traits to ontology, markers to genetic/physical maps and germplasms to pedigree and their sources. Initially, each dataset is stored privately, and can only be accessed by the researcher comparing his results to public ones. Data is made public once the researcher decides to do so typically after the publication of the corresponding scientific paper.

Project Unity isn’t just a data repository, but much more. A fully indexed and cataloged database, it offers researchers the ability to automatically match data deposited by different sources and identifies findings, through data mining algorithms that could not be revealed by each study separately. Moreover, whenever a new dataset is made public in the future, each researcher automatically receives the relevant findings that result from matching their data with the new datasets added to Unity.

Project Unity allows you to see the big picture, by evaluating marker effects on phenotypes not only in your study, but in hundreds of genomics (QTL and GWAS) studies from different sources that examine data (markers, phenotypes, species) that is relevant to you.
