UC Davis Plant Breeding AcademySM (PBA) and Phenome-Networks of Nes-Ziona, Israel have reached an agreement for use of Phenome-Network Software for teaching at the PBA. Under this agreement, PBA students and instructors will have a free term license and access to Phenome-Networks system and some of its databases allowing demonstration and exercise using data from multiple crops.

Phenome-Networks is a privately owned bioinformatics company that developed a web-based platform for data integration in breeding research. The strength of the software is in simple and intuitive graphics of trends and patterns that can be converted to knowledge and to identification of genetic markers that affect phenotypes. Phenome Networks’ platform consists of two components: 1) breeding data management, and 2) statistical analysis of biological experiments. These are being used by customers in the private sector, academic laboratories and research projects.

“At Phenome-Networks, we recognize the importance of plant breeding education. We are very glad to offer our software and databases to be used for teaching purposes by UC Davis Plant Breeding Academy, a program well recognized by the global seed industry. The Phenome-Networks system is based on web technology and integrates many open source applications under a single platform. In particular, it is open for extension such that customers can add functionality by creating their own plug-ins. We believe that UC Davis PBA instructor and student interaction would lead to improvement in functionality of the system” – says Dr. Yaniv Semel, co-founder and product manager at Phenome-Networks.

The UC Davis Plant Breeding AcademySM is a postgraduate program that teaches the fundamentals of plant breeding, genetics and statistics through lectures, discussion, and field trips to public and private breeding programs. Employers appreciate the opportunity to provide their valued employees advanced training without disrupting their full-time employment. Participants attend six 6-day sessions at UC Davis. The instructors are internationally recognized experts in plant breeding and seed technology.

UC Davis Plant Breeding AcademySM2012 Class begins in September. It will include new topics that reflect the most recent developments in plant breeding theory and practice. Applications are now being accepted.
